Texas Holdem Back, by Mark Bentz, RMT
With the incredible revival of poker and more specifically Texas Holdem, our massage therapy clinic is seeing an increase in people coming in with low back and neck pain. Clients, male and female, are saying they spend up to 5 hours a day playing Texas Holdem. This type of activity is a nightmare for your body but a dream state for a massage therapy clinic that treats poor posture. A static posture like the one assumed when you play Texas Holdem is a guaranteed way to develop low back and neck pain.

Sitting to long is the number one reason clients visit our Vancouver massage therapy clinic. Your body is built to move. It needs activity to remain vital. When playing Texas Holdem make sure to get up and move around. If not for your body do it for your game. You will psych your opponents out. They will think you are WPT (world poker tournament) material.

To stay out of our Vancouver massage therapy clinic you also need to keep that head and neck straight. Prolonged head forward posture is a sure way to get headaches and become cranky. Neck pain results from an in balance of your cervical spine muscles. Head forward posture makes the muscles in the front of your neck shorten and the muscles in the back of your neck lengthen.

As a fellow Texas Holdem player here are my top five tips when playing Texas Holdem:

1. Move around
2. Sit on your sit bones. These are the two bumps on your bum.
3. Tuck your chin in.
4. Keep your feet flat on the floor.
5. Do not slow play a pair of aces post flop.
