Craniosacral Therapy, what is it?

Vancouver Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle yet extremely powerful form of treatment which focuses on the movement of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the connective tissue membrane surrounding the brain and spinal column.

CST is so gentle that it can be used on babies and young children for problems such as colic, feeding difficulties, and problems that are attributed to compression in the birth canal during birth.

Elderly persons and those in pain or extremely frail can also be safely treated, as well as adults suffering from a wide range of conditions.

It is a profound healing process which can influence the deeply held patterns of disease - both physical and psychological - which accumulate throughout life as a result of injury and illness and become held into the body tissues, leading to ill-health and dysfunction.

How does it work?

The craniosacral system has a rhythm that can be felt throughout the body, similar to our cardiovascular or respiratory rhythms. Using a touch generally no heavier than 5 grams, the therapist can monitor this rhythm at key body points to pinpoint the source of any restriction or stress. Once a source has been determined, they can influence the natural movement of the fluid and related soft tissue to help the body self-correct. Often this light touch is all it takes to remove a restriction. Other times, CST may be combined with other complementary therapies to help restore the body to its optimum functioning condition.

What does a session involve?

You will lie face up on our heated and comfortable massage table. There is no need to disrobe so it is recommended that you wear loose, comfortable clothing. The therapist's touch is very subtle and deeply soothing but it can have a profound effect on your whole body as it stimulates and enhances self-healing mechanisms within the body to respond, release and open up to a more balanced healthy state.

Most people experience deep relaxation. There is sometimes a feeling of lightness while some people actually see colours and patterns, or have memories come to them. Many clients often take a nap during the session while others become energized.

How is CST beneficial?

CST works on many different levels and influences many different structures within the body. It influences the musculo-skeletal system, the nervous system, the cardiovascular-vascular system, the immune system, the organs, the connective tissues, the fluids and the energy systems of the body. It therefore has widespread and profound effects on conditions affecting all of these systems.

Apart from enhancing the function of the above-mentioned systems, CST has been known to benefit a wide range of conditions, including headaches/migraines, arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, autism, insomnia, neck and back pain, whiplash injuries, post-operative problems, digestive problems, sports injuries, tinnitus, temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ),  ear aches, sinusitis, depression and other stress-related illnesses.
