Most commonly associated with treating backaches, chiropractic is actually a comprehensive approach to health care. In fact, chiropractors are licensed doctors who are fully qualified to diagnose a whole range of illnesses.
Chiropractic care is also not limited to any specific age group, meaning that the whole family can benefit from the treatments. Chiropractors are trained to care for all patients from senior years down to infancy, and chiropractic care has even been suggested as a treatment for infant colic.
In general chiropractic care seeks to improve the overall health of the patient through examination and treatment of the neuromusculoskeletal system. When we break this word down we see that chiropractic is concerned with the body’s nerves, muscles, and bones.
The role of the chiropractor is to work with the patient, through treatment sessions, to diagnose and cure interferences of the nervous system. Commonly treated conditions include headaches, migraines, back pains, and joint injuries.
Chiropractic care also focuses on disease prevention and improvement of the patient’s overall sense of wellbeing. By maximizing the functioning of the nervous system, chiropractic treatment is able to have a positive impact on a person’s physical, mental, and emotional health. One treatment strategy frequently employed to achieve this is spinal adjustment.
The spine is a continuous structure that runs from the base of the skull to the hips. When one area of this structure is misaligned it can create physical stress on other areas and can also infringe on the nervous system’s ability to function. By realigning the spine the chiropractor is able to alleviate pain, improve functioning of the nervous system, and prevent further injury.
Another of the most commonly recognized chiropractic treatments is neck adjustment. This treatment involves skilled manipulation of the neck within its normal range of motion. The benefits of this treatment include increased flexibility, alleviation of pain, and improved functioning of the nervous system.
Although they are the two most commonly associated with chiropractors, spinal realignment and neck readjustment are not the only treatment courses prescribed by chiropractors. Because chiropractic is based on a holistic approach to medicine, these doctors are interested in the patient’s entire picture of health. As a result it is not uncommon for chiropractors to recommend additional complimentary treatments.
One complimentary therapy that works well with chiropractic is massage. By further stimulating the circulatory and nervous system, massage therapy can heighten the benefits that chiropractic offer.
Massage therapy is also a useful treatment to help hasten recovery from a chiropractic session. Although chiropractic is a safe and non-invasive therapy, patients can experience some minor aches and stiffness following an adjustment. This discomfort is usually short lived and a session with a registered massage therapist can relax those aching muscles.
