Mastectomy – Breast Cancer Patients
– Vancouver – Everest Therapeutics
Electra Health offers registered massage therapy for anyone recovering from a mastectomy in the downtown Vancouver area. A mastectomy is often a viable and necessary surgery for breast cancer prevention or treatment. However, for many, a mastectomy can be accompanied by both physical and emotional pain.
At Electra Health, our Vancouver massage therapists treat those dealing with the challenges of a mastectomy. Massage therapy can help reduce pain and tension in the chest, improve mood and quality of life, increase mobility, improve post-operative recovery time, and boost your immune system.
Massage therapy is one of the most essential components for rehabilitation post-mastectomy. It can decrease side effects, such as lymphedema, chronic pain, nerve damage, decreased mobility, anxiety, depression, and more. Our clinic, located in downtown Vancouver, can help you effectively manage your pain and rehabilitation from mastectomy surgery.
The following therapists are trained in massage therapy targeted at mastectomies and lumpectomies. :

How it Works
During a mastectomy, surgical incisions are made to remove some or all of the breast tissue. Scar tissue, the body’s natural response to trauma, will develop as a result. Depending on the size of the incision and operation, this type of surgery can also impact the fascia, lymph nodes, and muscles. This can cause limited mobility, muscle restriction, pain, neuropathy, swelling, and more in the body.
By applying specific techniques, our massage therapists can help rehabilitate this area. Studies have shown that localized chronic pain and decreased mobility are common issues post-surgery, even with the intervention of medication and physical therapy. Myofascial release–a massage therapy technique– has been shown to reduce pain and tension, and improve mobility and posture.
In certain instances, your massage therapist can also apply Swedish massage techniques. As with many illnesses, your mental health can take a hit–anxiety and depression can develop, and your quality of life can diminish. However, research has indicated that–when applied correctly–Swedish massage can improve both qualities of life and mood, increasing dopamine levels and lowering both anxiety and depression.
Consistent massage therapy as part of your rehabilitation program can also improve your circulation, and decrease swelling and other conditions such as lymphedema. It can also boost your immune system, as it has been shown to increase your lymphocyte and Natural Killer (NK-LGL) cells.
FAQs
Is it safe to have a massage after a mastectomy?
Absolutely. In fact, it’s one of the most effective ways of rehabilitating the area. Generally speaking, you can begin massage therapy treatments at 5 weeks post-op. However, as everyone is different, we recommend that you consult with your doctor prior to your treatment.
Is massage safe for breast cancer patients?
Yes! Research has shown that massage therapy is both physically and emotionally beneficial if you are undergoing treatment for breast cancer: improved mood and cognition, higher quality of life, lower stress levels, and decreased tension and pain.
When should I start massaging my mastectomy scar?
After 5-6 weeks, the scar tissue has become strong enough to handle direct pressure from massage, whether it be by you or a healthcare professional. Self-massage should be done 2-3 times daily for ten minutes at a time.
Can massage therapy break up scar tissue?
Yes! Massage therapy is an excellent way to break up scar tissue. The body can struggle to arrange its cells and tissues after surgery, which can cause them to clump together and lose their normal structure. This can also create restrictions in the area and cause both pain and discomfort. Massage is an excellent way to break down these tissues so that your body can restructure these tissues correctly.
Do I have to be naked to get a mastectomy massage?
No! Being comfortable and feeling supported is what matters most. Your massage therapist will discuss your comfort levels prior to your treatment.
